The NFL has confirmed it will play its first regular-season match in Australia at the MCG next year.T he NFL is yet to announce when the match will be played.
The league has committed to a multi-year agreement to stage matches in Melbourne following discussions with the Victorian government. Melbourne will become the only city in the world that will host an international tennis grand slam (tournament), a Formula One Grand Prix and now an NFL regular-season game.
Outside the USA, the NFL has also held regular season games in London, Munich, Frankfurt, São Paulo, Mexico City and Toronto.The Los Angeles Rams have been selected as the "designated team", with their opponents to be announced at a later date.
The Los Angeles Rams were founded in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams, winning the NFL Championship in 1945 before relocating to Los Angeles in 1946. In LA, they became a prominent team, winning the NFL Championship in 1951 and introducing high-powered offenses in the 1950s and 1960s. After financial struggles, the team moved to St. Louis in 1995, where they won Super Bowl XXXIV in 1999 as the "Greatest Show on Turf." The Rams returned to Los Angeles in 2016, and in 2021, they won their second Super Bowl LVI, solidifying their legacy in both the NFL and the city of Los Angeles.
LA Rams president Kevin Demoff, said that "We always view ourselves as the franchise of firsts, and to dream big, and what better opportunity to play the first regular season game in Australia in the league's history, We could not be more excited."
